Monsel Solution is a reddish-brown odorless liquid, widely known as Ferric Subsulfate Solution that is classified as an astringent, used as a styptic. An astringent substance is a chemical compound that tends to shrink or constrict body tissues and used in the relief of such minor skin irritations as those resulting from superficial cuts, allergies, insect bites, or fungal infections such as athlete's foot. This Solution is less irritating than ferric sulfate solution, owing to the smaller proportion of sulfuric acid. It is soluble with water or alcohol, and is affected by light.
